Alcan reports record aluminum can recycling.

CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 21, 1995--Alcan recycled more than 50 all-aluminum beverage cans for every man, woman and child in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  in 1994--providing an important contribution to the record volume of aluminum cans recycled by Americans last year.

The company announced today it recycled more than 13 billion used aluminum beverage cans in 1994, a significant increase over the 11 billion cans it recycled a year earlier. Of all the aluminum beverage cans returned for recycling by Americans in 1994, Alcan recycled one in five.

When Americans recycle aluminum cans, they benefit the environment by saving landfill space, reducing litter, and conserving the energy to make new aluminum from raw materials.

Aluminum cans are recycled in a closed loop process, with virtually no limit to the number of times they can be recycled. In as few as 90 days, used cans are emptied and returned by consumers, melted, cast into huge ingots, rolled into coils of beverage can sheet, formed into new cans, filled by soft drink companies and brewers, and returned to retail shelves, quickly completing the continuous recycling loop.

The Aluminum Association, Can Manufacturers Institute and the Institute of Recycling Scrap Industries, also reported today that 65.4 percent of all aluminum cans produced in the United States last year were returned by consumers for recycling, topping the 1993 rate of 63.1 percent.

``Alcan is pleased to be involved in a business that provides such abundant environmental and financial benefits,'' said Steven F. Fehling, vice president, Alcan Rolled Products-Recycling. ``We are continuing to invest additional capital into new facilities which will expand our company's and nation's ability to continue to recycle at these high levels each year.''

The value of the aluminum beverage cans recycled by Alcan in 1994 in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  exceeded $225 million.

Aluminum recycling's success as a market-driven, private sector industry (requiring no government stimulation or support) is based on several key factors:

o Markets for aluminum recyclables are strong, efficient and

competitive;

o The aluminum industry will buy back every can available for

recycling because demand for cans as a source of new metal is

stable and virtually guaranteed;

o Aluminum's value, six to 10 times that of other packaging,

provides significant revenue to municipalities, community and

charitable organizations, scrap metal dealers and individual

recyclers;

o Aluminum cans provide the ``financial engine'' for municipal

curbside and drop-off recycling systems, providing the only

recyclable that more than covers its own collection and

processing costs.
