Like LG, Alberto-Culver executives cited Wales' supportive business climate as a reason for their latest expansion.

"This is the third expansion since we centralized our European manufacturing in Wales six years ago. We considered expanding elsewhere, but our Welsh operation has a history of great return on investment," said Alberto-Culver Chairman Leonard H. Lavin. "The dedication and commitment of the local work force has made a key contribution to our success. And we are grateful for the great ongoing support we have received from the Welsh Development Agency and other organizations."

Over 2,000 different products are manufactured at the Welsh factory including household names such as Alberto VO5 and Alberto Balsam balsam (bôl`səm), fragrant resin obtained from various trees. The true balsams are semisolid and insoluble in water, but they are soluble in alcohol and partly so in hydrocarbons. . Products made in the Welsh plant are distributed as far afield as the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe. Total 1995 sales for the Melrose Park, Ill.-based company were about $1.4 billion.

As part of the expansion, Alberto-Culver will spend $5 million to build a 50,000 addition to its 140,000-square-foot facilities in Swansea, Wales. The expansion program is being partly funded by the Welsh Office, part of the British Government.
