Albemarle Expands into Mineral Flame Retardants.Albemarle Corp., Richmond, Va., a major supplier of bromine-based flame retardants Flame retardants are materials that inhibit or resist the spread of fire. Naturally occurring substances such as asbestos as well as synthetic materials, usually halocarbons such as polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorendic acid , will soon expand its business to include mineral-based FR compounds. The company is acquiring Germany's Martinswerk GmbH, the world's biggest producer of alumina alumina (əl `mĭnə) or aluminum oxide, Al2O3, chemical compound with m.p. about 2,000°C; and sp. gr. about 4.0. trihydrate for plastics and rubber. The deal includes Martinswerk's manufacturing facilities and headquarters in Bergheim, and its 50% stake in Magnifin Magnesia Magnesia, ancient cities, LydiaMagnesia (măgnē`zhə), two ancient cities of Lydia, W Asia Minor (now W Turkey).
