Alaska Airlines Delays Legal Action; Union Urges Agents to Return to Work.


SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 16, 1999--

Alaska Airlines Alaska Airlines, (NYSE: ALK) is an airline based in Seattle, Washington, United States. It operates hubs at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and Portland International Airport.  issued the following updated statement regarding an apparent "sick out" by customer service and ramp agents today:

"Earlier today Alaska Airlines' flight schedule was disrupted when an unusually large number of customer service and ramp agents called in `sick.'

"We believe this action to be illegal, and contacted District 143 of the International Machinists Union (IAM IAM - Interactive Algebraic Manipulation. Interactive symbolic mathematics for PDP-10.

) to bring it to their attention. They have responded with the following statement, issued on the IAM website and union hotline:

`District 143 has received word today from Alaska Airlines and

the media of possible job actions being taken by Alaska Airlines

employees. The district does not condone condone v. 1) to forgive, support, and/or overlook moral or legal failures of another without protest, with the result that it appears that such breaches of moral or legal duties are acceptable. , encourage or sanction sanction, in law and ethics, any inducement to individuals or groups to follow or refrain from following a particular course of conduct. All societies impose sanctions on their members in order to encourage approved behavior.

`If there is some type of grassroots protest campaign going on,

we feel that it would adversely impact present contract

negotiations.

`Our concern is that possible discipline could come from the

Company in response to supposed job actions on the part of our

members.

continue to show your professionalism in performing your work

duties and allow the negotiating process to continue as it is

supposed to without outside influences.'

"After reviewing the IAM statement, Alaska has decided to temporarily delay seeking a Federal Court restraining order restraining order: see injunction. , so that the union may immediately follow through on its promise and compel Compel - COMpute ParallEL  employees to return to work.

"Alaska has also been in contact with the IAM and requested that it take specific proactive steps to contact any individuals or groups engaging in what it terms "grassroots protests" in order to fulfill its obligations to stop the actions immediately.
