products, further strengthening the PowerHub product family as the industry's most comprehensive set of Fast Ethernet switching solutions from the backbone to the desktop.

The addition of four new modules allows implementation of Fast Ethernet throughout the enterprise, while retaining a consistent, interoperable and software-rich feature set across the network.

The PowerHub family will now include four new products: for the PowerHub 7000, a 6x1 Universal Fast Ethernet Module and a 2x8 Fast Ethernet microsegment module; for the PowerHub 6000, a 2x12 Fast Ethernet microsegment module and a 1x12 Fast Ethernet microsegment module.

"Along with our recently announced PowerHub 4100 series, these additions to our Fast Ethernet product offerings demonstrate our commitment to developing affordable high-speed switching technology for the entire enterprise, from the backbone to the desktop," said George Archuleta, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Alantec Corporation. "Fast Ethernet has become an important technology in the hierarch of bandwidth required in many corporations' networks, and our implementation is extensive, flexible, and offers a smooth migration path to ATM."

Distributed Intelligence The placing of processing capability in terminals and other peripheral devices. Intelligent terminals handle screen layouts, data entry validation and other pre-processing steps. Intelligence placed into disk drives and other peripherals relieves the central computer from routine tasks.  Architecture Maintains Performance Across The LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.

The 6x1 Universal Fast Ethernet module for Alantec's flagship PowerHub 7000, is an intelligent, high performance module containing two on-board RISC processors RISC processor [Reduced Instruction Set Computer], computer arithmetic-logic unit that uses a minimal instruction set, emphasizing the instructions used most often and optimizing them for the fastest possible execution.  as well as its own shared memory (1) Using part of main memory to support a low-cost display circuit that does not have its own memory. See shared video memory.

(2) The common memory in a symmetric multiprocessing system that is available to all CPUs. See SMP.

. On-board intelligence allows packet processing functions to be performed by the module itself, hence reducing the load on the central processors in the PowerHub. This distributed intelligence architecture improves performance and scalability, allowing users to install up to nine Fast Ethernet modules in a single PowerHub, while maintaining high levels of overall system performance.

Advanced features include on-board bridging, 802.1d Spanning Tree, multiprotocol routing, and multilayer VLANs. A high performance scalable architecture, combined with the advanced software feature set of the PowerHub, provides users with one of the most robust Fast Ethernet switching solutions available on the market today.

The 6x1 Universal Fast Ethernet module occupies a single slot in the PowerHub 7000's chassis and provides six Fast Ethernet segments, each with a single physical connection capable of supporting full-duplex operation. Each segment of the module can be configured to support any of the three 100Base-T media types, -TX, -T4, and -FX (including both multi- and single-mode fiber See singlemode fiber. ). Users have the flexibility to implement this module in a variety of configurations, including high performance workgroups, server farms, and collapsed backbones.

The PowerHub 7000 also supports a variety of other networking technologies, including Ethernet, FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers.  and ATM, providing a robust platform to support highly dynamic, heterogeneous networks. The PowerHub's scalable, software-centric architecture delivers the flexibility to meet current and future networking needs.

Microsegment Modules Provide Benefits of Switching

Three additional microsegment modules will provide PowerHub 6000 and 7000 users with inexpensive 100Base-T repeater (1) A communications device that amplifies (analog) or regenerates (digital) the data signal in order to extend the transmission distance. Available for both electronic and optical signals, repeaters are used extensively in long distance transmission.  technology for desktops and workgroups. All three new modules combine the advantages of low-cost 100Base-T repeater technology with the benefits of switching. Coupled with PowerHub's existing features, including support for full-featured bridging, 802.1d Spanning Tree, multiprotocol routing and multilayer VLANs, these three Fast Ethernet microsegment modules offer advanced flexibility and features as compared to others in the industry.

Using Alantec's microsegment switching technology, customers will be able to cost-effectively reduce bottlenecks at the desktop level and to improve connections between the desktop and the enterprise. For example, Alantec's microsegment modules are able to deliver shared Fast Ethernet at a lower price point than dedicated switches to workgroups that require the increased bandwidth of Fast Ethernet but do not yet need dedicated 100Mbps for every desktop.

The PowerHub 7000 2x8 Fast Ethernet microsegment module occupies a single slot and supports two repeated Fast Ethernet segments with eight 100Base-TX connections per segment, for a total of 16 physical connections. Two similar cards for the PowerHub 6000, the 1x12 and the 2x12 Fast Ethernet microsegment modules, occupy single slots and support one or two repeated Fast Ethernet segments with 12 or 24 100Base-TX connections per segment, respectively.

. Fast Ethernet capabilities are available across the product line, including the PowerHub 4000, 4100, 6000 and 7000.

The PowerHub family is the only product line to bring both multilayer and multiprotocol switching to backbone, departmental, and workgroup sections of the LAN allowing network managers to extend the reach of their corporate Virtual LANs (VLANs, or software-defined network configurations, logical workgroups or subnets that are not dependent on the physical location of end users).

The PowerHub's uniform software platform provides customers with the same features across the breadth of the product line for an integrated, end-to-end LAN switching solution. New PowerHub products can be added with total compatibility and customers will be able to migrate to future technologies when they become available.

The PowerHub product family can be managed via PowerSight, Alantec's graphical-based network management software application. With PowerSight, network managers can control the PowerHub's tight integration of hub, bridge and router features, manage bandwidth distribution and allocation, monitor segment utilization and create VLAN See virtual LAN.

About Alantec Corporation

Alantec Corporation designs, manufactures and markets intelligent switching hubs which increase network performance for local area networks. Founded in 1987, Alantec is the design pioneer of the industry's first multiprotocol, multilayer LAN switching product -- the PowerHub -- which melds the strengths of both full-featured bridging and multiprotocol routing within a single LAN internetworking device. The PowerHub family is the industry's most comprehensive product line of multiprotocol LAN switches. During 1994, Alantec was the second largest worldwide supplier of switched Ethernet An Ethernet network that is controlled by a switch instead of a shared hub.
