Alan S. Kaplan.Alan S. Kaplan, MD, MMM, FACPE, FACHE, is vice president and chief medical officer of Iowa Health System headquartered in Des Moines. Kaplan has 15 years of medical leadership experience. As VP/CMO, he will lead Iowa's efforts to create and coordinate physician support activities and clinical resource management initiatives. He also serves as president of Iowa Health Physicians and works closely with the affiliates' vice presidents of medical affairs. Most recently, Kaplan worked as vice president of operations and chief medical officer for Edward Health Services Corp. in Naperville, 111. In that role, he oversaw key organizational growth and expansion activities, including developing extensive outpatient services and pursuing the state's certificate of need approval for a 162-bed acute care hospital. Kaplan received his undergraduate education at the University of Illinois and earned his MD from Rush Medical College in Chicago. He also earned his Master's of Medical Management from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He served his residencies in otorhinolaryngology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and in emergency medicine at Christ Hospital & Medical Center in Oak Lawn, 111. He had served as the chair of emergency services at Edward Hospital and is board certified in emergency medicine.
