Alameda Alameda (ăləmē`də, –mā`də), city (1990 pop. 76,459), Alameda co., W central Calif., on an island just off the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay; settled 1850, inc. as a city 1884. opened its first Main Library in 1903, funded by a $35,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie Carnegie (kärnĕg`ē, kär`nəgē), borough (1990 pop. 9,278), Allegheny co., SW Pa., an industrial suburb of Pittsburgh; inc. 1894. A steel town, it has coal mines and plants that make chemicals and electrical equipment. . The replacement of the Carnegie building The Carnegie Building is the current home of the Cognitive Science Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. It is one of the western-most buildings on the campus and as such provides scenic views overlooking the city of Troy and the Hudson River. is the culmination of a 30-year initiative to address library sizing and structural issues. In 2000, Alameda voters approved a $10.6 million bond to help build a new Main Library and improve the branch libraries. In 2002, the State of California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W). approved a $15.5 million Public Library Construction and Renovation Bond Act grant to offset 65% of the cost of building the new Main Library. The new 50,000-square-foot Alameda Main Library will serve as a model for similar facilities and will incorporate community-friendly features such as public art, meeting rooms, a computer laboratory, a cafe, and small group study rooms. A reception in Alameda City Hall will follow the ceremony. |
