Alameda County Medical Center (ACMC ACMC Alameda County Medical Center

) continues its multi-language cancer screening outreach program this Saturday, January 24, offering Pap smears Pap smear

and clinical breast exams for Cambodian speaking women.

Specific language clinics are held monthly from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m. at Highland Hospital's Saturday Screening Clinic. Written materials about cancer are provided in the target language, and trained medical interpreters are on site. Regular clinics for all nationalities are held on the first and third Saturdays at the same location from 8:00 to 2:30 p.m. On Saturdays when there is a special language clinic, general clinic hours are from 11:30 to 2:30 p.m.

The multi-language screening clinics began last August and continue through March 2004. Tigrigna (February 21) and Vietnamese (March 20) will be the next languages featured in the special clinics. Those interested in these clinics should call the Interpreter-Translation Services Office for an appointment at 510-437-4484.

Regular twice-monthly screening clinics will continue after March with translators provided as available.

The screening clinics are a component of the Pathfinders Program under the direction of Linda P. Engelstad, MD. Pathfinders works to improve outreach, screening, and follow-up for women at risk of breast and cervical cancer Cervical Cancer Definition

"In doing this work we discovered that we were treating relatively few non-English speaking women," said Dr. Engelstad. "Data told us that our screening rates for the limited English proficiency (LEP (Light Emitting Polymer) An organic polymer that glows (emits photons) when excited by electricity. So we began the multi-language program and it's been very successful. We're hoping to find funding to continue this work after March."

The program currently receives support from the San Francisco Bay Area “Bay Area” redirects here. For other uses, see Bay Area (disambiguation).
