Now organizations can replace existing tape libraries with this disk-based solution reducing storage management costs while setting new standards for capacity, performance, price, and manageability. The first customer ship is scheduled for June in Japan.

Since disk storage prices have dropped to a level now competitive with tape, technologies such as the Hitachi Virtual Tape Library have been developed to assist customers with the critical task of backup and restore. With this latest move by Hitachi and Alacritus, IT administrators get all the benefits of utilizing a disk-based technology.

The solution works as a replacement to or as a complement to existing storage systems while still running backup applications and other programs without interruption.

Steve Kenniston, a Technology Analyst with the Enterprise Storage Group, commented, "The combination of Hitachi's expertise with disk array subsystems and Alacritus' powerful software is a perfect example of where the next generation of backup and restore technologies are headed. Customers now have a viable alternative for tape backup Using magnetic tape for storing duplicate copies of hard disk files. Users can add an internal or external tape drive to their desktop computers for backup purposes, and files are typically copied to the tapes using a backup utility that updates on a periodic schedule.  and restore."

Shigeru Yoneda, General Manager, SAN Systems Solution Division, Hitachi, Ltd., said, "The partnership of Alacritus and Hitachi strengthens our ability to deliver storage management solutions that are meaningful to our customers; the Hitachi Virtual Tape Library provides high performance backup operations."

added, "This solution brings a great relief to customers struggling to keep up with growing data volumes. The rapid advances that disk technology has over tape technology solve a critical problem for IT administrators: the shrinking backup window."
