In 2007, railroads invested nearly $9.4 billion in capital expenditures in their networks. Investments in safety technology, such as the use of satellite or wireless positioning technology to give dispatchers the precise location of trains at all times, contributed to the 7.8 percent reduction in train accidents caused by human error.
