"The growing prominence and increasing threat of security breaches in this country has major consequences on the ability of organizations, such as credit unions to conduct business effectively and maintain the trust of their members," said Gary B. Wolter, President/CEO of the Alabama Credit Union League. "This comprehensive program gives our participating member credit unions peace of mind and offers them an effective response mechanism should they have the misfortune to experience a security breach," said Wolter. "This program helps to satisfy an important component of a credit union's regulatory mandate provided by this rule," said Eduard Goodman, General Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer for Identity Theft 911. Federally regulated credit unions are required to maintain written policies and procedures Policies and Procedures are a set of documents that describe an organization's policies for operation and the procedures necessary to fulfill the policies. They are often initiated because of some external requirement, such as environmental compliance or other governmental , all subject to audit, which outline their response to a security breach or database compromise.

Under the program, the 81 credit unions are all treated equally, regardless of size. "This represents a tremendous benefit to smaller credit unions with limited resources that can least afford the economic ramifications ramifications nplAuswirkungen pl  and negative goodwill that could result from a poorly managed response to a security breach," said Levin. "The ACUL's decision to provide this service at no charge represents a landmark event in the credit union landscape."
