AL EILErose to the challenge at the third time of asking to win the December Festival Hurdle on the final day of Leopardstown's big meeting.

Timmy Murphy kept widest of all on the 9-2 shot - in the process holding the 15-8 favourite Jazz Messenger towards the inner - before making his move.

Al Eile drove into the lead and swept down the centre to hold off the renewed challenge of Hardy Eustace.

Jazz Messenger was a neck back in third having been in the clear since the final flight.

A Grade One win ensured colourful owner Michael Ryan ended 2007 on a high. He enjoyed considerable success throughout the previous 12 months with Al Eile and Classic-winning filly, Finsceal Beo.

Bookmaker reaction was mixed to Al Eile's win with Stan James biggest about his chances in the Champion Hurdle at 25-1.

Coral cut him to 20-1 while Ladbrokes go 16-1 and Paddy Power just 14s.

AChampion Hurdle bid for the runner-up has yet to be ruled in or out with trainer Dessie Hughes leaving a decision until nearer the time.
