Al Zamil breaks new ground in steel tank construction.

LEADING tank jack system manufacturer in the Middle East region Al Zamil Metal Works Factory (AZMWF) is breaking new ground in the repair and refurbishment of tank base repair with the use of jacking system.

The company, well known in Saudi Arabia, has always adopted a systematic approach in utilising the jacking system in constructing steel tanks, says Capt Ahmed Al-Tabei, assistant general manager, Al-Zamil Metal Works Factory. AZMWF is credited with setting records in the tank manufacturing industry in Saudi Arabia when it erected the Dome Roof Tank (31.7 metre (m) diameter by jacking system). The tank has a capacity of four million US gallons. The structure became the fresh water storage tank for Al Khafji joint operations, KGOC/AGOC (Kuwait Gulf Oil Company and Aramco Gulf Oil), operating with a consortium of SETE Energy and Carlo Gavazzi. In recent developments, AZMWF has entered into a relationship with Bygwikk (UK) Ltd, the UK based manufacturer of Tank's Jacking System. In addition to this achievement and pioneering steps in the Tank Jacking System, AZMWF is also committed to the globally accredited system of international standards, IS0900:2000. AZMWF facility, located in Jeddah Industrial Area Phase 5 and spread over an area of 50,000 sq m, is now an ISO 9001:2000 certified and it has also got ASME for pressure vessels 'U' and 'R' Stamps. As a manufacturer of a wide range of items in the steel industry, AZMWF has strong trade ties with numerous clients namely: Saudi Aramco; Sceco; Geo Robson (Conveyors); The National Titanium Dioxide (Cristal); SNC Lavaline Europe BV; Saudi Arabian Mining (Maa'den); D Smet Engineers & Contractors SA (DSec); SETE Energy; United Sugar Company (USC); Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC); Southern Province Cement Company (SPCC); Al Khafji Joint Operation (KJO); Saudi Aramco Lubricating Oil Refining (Luberef); Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI); Macchi Steam and Power Generation (Italy); Whessoe Oil and Gas (UK); Saudi Yanbu Petrochemical (Yanpet); United Flower Vegetable Oil; Saudi Arabian Glass and Savola Edible Oil. Recently AZMWF handed over TK 125 and TK-128 and is now working on ATK-01 which is due to be completed by early 2009. The scope of supply ranged from replacement of tank foundation, bottom plate, CP system, overhauling of the roof drainage system and other tank accessories that need rehabilitation or replacement with a diameter of 60.98 m and height of 14.634 m. This would serve as a crude oil tank for KJO. It also supplied 24 tanks to United Flower Vegetable Oil with minimum 8 m maximum 12 m diameter. Also, Luberef Yanbu and Jeddah plant awarded a three year contract for the various storage tank refurbishment/maintenance of bottom plates, shell plates, roof plates, tank foundation and other tank appurtenances that needs repairs. Initially, at Yanbu plant, AZWMF handed over tank F 8003 (roof plates and roof structures replacement, 13.80 m diameter and 12.22 m high), F 8001 (internal roof end top shell ring painting Norks, 17.20 m diameter and 12.20 m high), and at Jeddah plant, it handed over tank F 9025 (bottom plate replacement of 20.5 m diameter). Also, Southern Province Cement (SPCC), have involved AZMWF in their expansion work by giving the fabrication work for EP system, Cooling Tower (4 m x 20m high) and Steel Stack (4 m x 80 m high). AZWMF has completed the works on New Cold Condensate Tank (18.50 m diameter and 6.80 m high) for SWCC at Shuqaiq plant. The scope of supply includes design, engineering, fabrication and tank foundation as well as piping works and now due to start the base repair using Jacks for Fuel Oil Tank No 2 (46.50 m x 12.45 m high). Other similar works include process water tank, F535B, (15 m diameter and 16.60 m high) for The National Titanium Dioxide Cristal at Yanbu. All these are dome roof type tanks, which are set up using the Jacking up System and are now just ready for handover. With these achievements and successes, Al Zamil aims to be a part of the continuous development of Saudi Arabia and the GCC. In Rabigh work on Sumitumo Tanks for MHI and Whessoe was carried out smoothly to the satisfaction of both MHI and Whessoe to a point where Sumitumo gave a plaque as an appreciation for the excellent and smooth professional work that involved design, fabrication, erection, painting and testing of CS and SS Tanks at PetroRabigh in accordance to API 650. Capt Ahmed is very optimistic that these good relations with Sumitumo and Whessoe will open doors for major 'tank works' (new and base repairs) in the near future with the full support of Byggwik (UK) for the Jacking system, not only in Saudi Arabia but also in the border countries.
