Al Gore Commends Cherry Hill, N.J. on Enacting Environmental Plan in Time for Earth Day.

Township Rolls Out RecycleBank Program Citywide, Other New Jersey Towns Follow

NEW YORK -- RecycleBank[TM], a rewards program that motivates people to recycle, announced today - Earth Day - that Cherry Hill, N.J. will be rolling out the RecycleBank program citywide, along with an environmental plan to help make Cherry Hill one of the greenest townships in the country. The announcement of the plan comes on the heels of a successful RecycleBank pilot program in the city's Knollwood neighborhood. The pilot program yielded unheralded results, including a 75 percent increase in the neighborhood's weekly weight of recyclables. RecycleBank motivates households and communities to recycle by measuring the amount of recyclables from the community and converting the weight into RecycleBank Reward Points. These Points can be viewed and redeemed at www.recyclebank.com with more than 400 national RecycleBank Reward Partners such as Kraft Foods, CVS/pharmacy, Green Mountain Coffee and Coca-Cola, as well as local reward partners like restaurants and grocery stores. Cherry Hill's environmental plan includes the following:

* The city-wide rollout of the RecycleBank program

* The installation of solar panels on the roof of the city municipal building

* An energy audit

* A switch to energy-efficient light bulbs

* Tree-planting programs

* The integration of hybrid and fuel-efficient cars to municipal vehicles.

We want to aggressively shrink our carbon footprint and our 10-point plan will move us towards that goal," said Mayor Bernie Platt. Cherry Hill's environmental plan caught the eye of former vice president and environmental lobbyist, Al Gore. Gore commends Cherry Hill's plan as a "progressive" step towards preserving and protecting the environment.

In a letter to the township, Gore wrote, "Cherry Hill's plan brings a much needed, multi-tiered approach, which is necessary to shrink our carbon footprint, conserve energy and create a sustainable society by using renewable energy resources and improving recycling standards. We are in an undeniable climate crisis throughout the world. I believe Cherry Hill's commitment to embrace green policy changes and clean energy is a prime example of what local governments can do to improve and preserve the environment."

Cities surrounding Cherry Hill have also begun to take action. Elk Township, N.J. has seen tremendous improvements in its recycling rates due to RecycleBank. The township has seen a 136 percent increase in its recycling rate, averaging more than 42 tons of recyclables a week. Clayton, Westville and Woolwich, N.J., have all seen stellar improvements in recycling rates as well. Glassboro and East Greenwich, N.J., have recently signed on to deploy RecycleBank's services in their communities.

Currently, RecycleBank is in more than 40 municipalities throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware, Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, Nebraska, Virginia, New York and New Jersey. To date, RecycleBank households have already diverted more than 36 million tons of recyclables from landfills.
