It was XonDemand's need to make a bigger name for themselves in the industry and Al Goldstein's desire to get back into the business that paired the two up in the March of 2005. Born in the late 1930s in New York City, Al Goldstein quickly developed a love for all things controversial. After a series of failed jobs, he launched Screw magazine in the fall of 1968. It was an instant success thanks to its mix of off-color editorials, political rants, and pornographic material. Al also produced and starred in a cable access show called Midnight Blue. He continued to push the envelope of good taste all through the 70s, 80s, and 90s. At his mansion in Florida, he erected an 11 foot high statue of a hand giving the middle finger, the ultimate Screw you symbol to those who opposed his career. But his success came at a price, and he couldn't stay at the top of his game forever. Throughout his career, he was arrested nearly 20 times on varying accounts of obscenity. In 2002, he was found guilty of harassing his former secretary for publishing her name in an issue of Screw. Thanks to the rising popularity of porn on the Internet, his magazine sales were down over 70% by 2003. The following year, he was forced to pull the plug on Screw, losing all of the $11 million he was worth. Al Goldstein went from living the life of luxury, to the life of a homeless person An individual who lacks housing, including one whose primary residence during the night is a supervised public or private facility that provides temporary living accommodations; an individual who is a resident in transitional housing; or an individual who has as a primary residence a . Adding insult to injury, in 2004 he was accused of stealing three books from a Barnes and Noble book store. The case is going to court soon. Al looked down, but he was far from out. During his many years as a successful porn publisher, he became close with such industry leaders as Hugh Hefner Hugh Marston Hefner (born April 9, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois), also referred to colloquially as Hef,[1] is the founder, editor-in-chief, and Chief Creative Officer of Playboy Enterprises[2]. He is the majority owner of Playboy Enterprise Inc. , Larry Flynt, and Bob Guccione Robert Charles Joseph Edward Sabatini Guccione (b. 17 December 1930 in Brooklyn, New York) was founder and, until his resignation in November 2003, publisher of the adult magazine Penthouse. Guccione was born in Brooklyn. . He made frequent appearances on The Howard Stern Show. But now it seemed that in order to make any sort of return to the industry, he'd have to call on his friends. Not all seemed willing to offer any help, but his first big break came from a surprising source, Penn Jilliette of the popular magician duo Penn and Teller. Penn rescued Al from living in a homeless shelter Homeless shelters are temporary residences for homeless people. Usually located in urban neighborhoods, they are similar to emergency shelters. The primary difference is that homeless shelters are usually open to anyone, without regard to the reason for need. and gave him money to get his own apartment in New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of . Late in 2004, he appeared again on Howard Stern to beg for a job... and it worked, sort of. He ended up working for another of his loves... food, at a local deli and bagel shop. Unfortunately after two months, he was fired for sleeping on the job. But during all this, he knew he really wanted to return to the business that made him a success, he just needed a way back in. XonDemand's president Frank Ryan read about Al's current situation in an Adult Video News press release and how he was seeking employment in the adult industry once again. Ryan saw this as a perfect opportunity for his growing company to really get itself on the map by teaming up with Al Goldstein. After a successful meeting in February 2005, Al was offered a position as National Marketing Director for XonDemand. Al will remain in New York and work out of his apartment, which will keep him closer to all the print, television, and radio opportunities New York City holds. Frank Ryan sees this as a win-win situation because his company needs national exposure, and Al get to do what Al does best, market and create awareness for himself and XonDemand. And things seem to be working out well for the pairing. Al has already appeared on the late night syndicated Joey Reynolds radio show, along with a high energy appearance on the nationally broadcast Derek and Romaine show on Sirius satellite radio
Al has no plans on stopping now. He is in talks to appear again on Howard Stern to talk about his come back, and has interviews lined up for several newspapers and other radio programs. He has a documentary titled "The Trials of Al Goldstein" set to debut at the Tribecca Film Festival on April 18, 2005 by first time director James Guardino. Al believes what Howard Stern is becoming for satellite radio by moving to Sirius, Al Goldstein will be for XonDemand in the world of pay per view, high speed internet access porn. He is very excited to be back in the field that launched him to a life of luxury. And the irony isn't lost on him either. The streaming technology that helped put his magazine out of business in the first place is the same that is bringing him back in the spotlight. Al really owes his comeback to his long time friends, his new business partners, and his never give up attitude! |
