Al Ahli lift Super Cup.

Byline: PATRICK SALOMON

AL AHLI AHLI American Home Lighting Institute  began the new basketball season yesterday the same way they ended the last: with trophy in hand.

The defending league champions added to their impressive collection of silverware last night, lifting the first-ever Bahrain Basketball Super Cup after defeating arch-rivals Manama 84-78 at a packed Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.

The Super Cup is set to be the one-off curtain-raising game for the annual hoops campaign. The contest pits the previous season's league champions with the Association Cup holders.

Sayed Hashim then added a bucket to extend their lead to five. His short stab virtually iced the game for Ahli, who are coached by veteran Bahraini tactician Aqeel Milad.

Shaker then scored from long range and Taylor added a power move inside for a three-point play that tied the game.

Prior to the quarter's end, Qurban was left alone beyond the arc, and he made Manama pay with a three that put Ahli up 21-18.

In the second, Mohammed made his presence felt and showed why he is set to make a significant impact with Ahli this year. The former Kuwait-based Bahraini lefty made successive triples before the half that gave his new team a 39-32 advantage at the break.

Late in the third, Shaker gave Ahli their first double-digit lead, 52-42, on a basket and free throw, but Manama managed to close the quarter strong and get back to within six.
