Alan Shearer Alan Shearer OBE (born 13 August 1970 in Gosforth) is a retired professional English footballer who played as a striker for the England national team and Premiership clubs, Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United.  privately insists he'll retire at the end of this season ( have you ever known him to change his mind about anything?

He is ready to go out on a high at Newcastle just as his mentor Kevin Keegan ended his own playing days back in the 80s.

Alan (pictured) wants to be remembered for what he is ( the best Premier League striker ever ( and the Beeb are pressing him to join their MOTD motd - message of the day  team full-time.

However, his great pal Rob Lee has just signed a short-term contract with Wycombe Wanderers at the age of 39.

Maybe it's lovely in theory to want to keep playing the great game, but personally I hate to see mighty stars become mere mortals beaten by lesser men.

I didn't like to witness the glorious Peter Beardsley at Hartlepool, George Best at Hibs, or Paul Gascoigne at Boston.

The real thing is what I want for my abiding memory.
