Net income for the quarter was $1.0 million or $0.06 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $577,000 reported for the comparable 1997 quarter. Excluding one-time one-time

The company said current quarter profits were higher due to a more profitable product mix, including acquired products, and greater manufacturing plant operating efficiencies.

This amount is calculated by subtracting the following items from gross sales: merchandise returned for credit, allowances for damaged or missing goods, freight
 for the quarter ended March 31, 1998 were $12.1 million, up 36 percent over last year's $8.9 million. Gross profit increased 82 percent to $6.2 million from $3.4 million. Gross margins increased to 52 percent from 39 percent in the comparable prior year period, primarily as a result of product acquisitions, improved manufacturing efficiencies and a higher-margin product mix.

Outlook:

R. Scott Zion, general manager of the Ophthalmic Division, stated, "Ophthalmic Division sales increased 14% for the quarter, reflecting our increased national accounts presence as well as product acquisitions. The Division continues to evaluate both proprietary and multisource products for development or acquisition. These combined marketing and development efforts should fuel continued growth through 1998."

Floyd Benjamin, president of Taylor Pharmaceuticals Inc., Akorn's Injectable Division, added, "Injectable sales increased 74% for the quarter, reflecting strong sales of acquired products. Favorable fa·vor·a·ble
