Akamai Technologies Tops Boston Globe 100 for 2006; Home Depot garners first place in inaugural Globe National 25; Complete results available at www.boston.com.


BOSTON -- The Boston Globe today announced the release of its annual Globe 100, a ranking of the top Massachusetts-based, publicly traded companies publicly traded company

Debuting this year is the Globe National 25, a ranking that indexes the leading publicly-traded national companies that are among the top 100 employers in the Bay State. Headquartered in Vinings, just outside Atlanta in unincorporated Cobb County, Georgia, Home Depot employs more than 355,000 people and operates 2,164 big-box

"The top of this year's Globe 100 class has companies representing all the key industries we like to think are key drivers of the Massachusetts economy: Internet and communications technologies, defense contracting and technology, biotech, life sciences, and financial services. There's even a high-tech laundromat company at number 8," said Peter J. Howe, editor of the Boston Globe 100. "What is notable this year is the depth and breadth of industries represented unlike many of the 17 previous Globe 100 years, where often one or two market categories like high tech or life science dominated."

The leading companies in this year's Globe 100 span a variety of industries including telecommunications, industrial manufacturing, biotech, financial services, medical devices and retail.

Akamai, from the telecom sector, is joined by Billerica-based American Science and Engineering, which finished second and Genzyme, the Cambridge-based biotech giant, which placed third.

Akamai soared to the top of the Globe 100 rankings despite having never cracked the top 100 since going public in 1999. Akamai's revenues totaled $283.1 million, a 34.8 percent increase from 2004. At the same time, the company showed a 608 percent increase in profit margin from a year ago.

The Globe 100, now in its 18th year, ranks Massachusetts-based public companies based on financial data from the four quarters ending closest to December 31, 2005, and for corresponding quarters a year earlier. To be eligible, the company must be traded publicly for the entire 2005 calendar year on either the New York Stock Exchange New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)

 and report revenue and profit for both 2004 and 2005. Companies are ranked on four criteria: return on average equity, one-year percentage change in revenue, one-year percentage change in profit margin and 2005 revenue.

Globe National 25

For the first time, the Boston Globe ranked the top 25 public companies nationally that are among the top 100 employers in Massachusetts. Retail companies led the list, with home improvement company The Home Depot landing the top spot in the inaugural "Globe National 25." The Atlanta-based retailer posted $81.5 billion in revenues, an 11.5 percent increase from 2004.

Lowe's, based in Morrisville, N.C., posted $43.2 billion in revenues, an increase of 18.6 percent and ranked second. Minnesota-based Best Buy saw a 12.4 percent bump in its revenues, which totaled $30.8 billion, and was ranked third.

The inaugural Globe National 25 uses identical metrics as the Globe 100, ranking public companies that are among the state's largest employers and headquartered outside of Massachusetts.
