Akamai Appoints Melanie Haratunian as Vice President and General Counsel.

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: AKAM), the world's largest 'on demand' distributed computing platform for conducting profitable e-business, today announced the appointment of Melanie Haratunian as Vice President and General Counsel.

Ms. Haratunian brings nearly 20 years experience to Akamai in the areas of telecommunications and technology advocacy, corporate leadership, negotiations, business development, and strategic planning. Most recently serving as Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Allegiance Telecom Company Worldwide, Ms. Haratunian's appointment to Akamai is effective immediately.

Ms. Haratunian succeeds Kathryn Meyer, who served as Akamai's General Counsel for over three years and has relocated to New York City for personal reasons. At Allegiance Telecom, comprised of approximately 4,000 employees, Ms. Haratunian managed the legal practice for the company's lines of business, and supervised all transactional and litigation professionals. Her role also included working as General Counsel for Allegiance Internet, Inc., overseeing all strategic and day-to-day legal matters for the company's eight Internet access and web-hosting subsidiaries.

Prior to Allegiance Telecom, Ms. Haratunian was Vice President and General Counsel of HarvardNet, Inc., where she established and managed the legal department, assisting in the company's growth from start-up to over 500 employees, and expansion into eight states.

Ms. Haratunian has also served as a Partner at the law firm of Halprin, Temple, Goodman & Sugrue of Washington DC, where her responsibilities included providing legal analysis for the negotiation of multi-million dollar contracts, and representing companies before the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Recognized as a national expert on customer privacy issues, Ms. Haratunian has been retained by Fortune 100 executives on matters of customer privacy regulations, as well as to strategize on impacting privacy legislation introduced in the U.S. Congress. She has developed customer privacy regulations that were incorporated into the 1996 Telecommunications Act, a statute that now applies to all U.S. telecommunications carriers.

She has also served as Legal Assistant to the Common Carrier Bureau Chief of the Federal Communications Commission, and Attorney-Advisor for the Policy and Program Planning Division, also with the FCC.

Ms. Haratunian received a JD from Georgetown University Law Center, and a B.A. in political science from Boston College.
