), the leading Content Delivery Service Provider (CDSP (Content Delivery Service Provider) A global network that provides faster delivery of Web pages over the Internet. Using servers stationed around the world with duplicate content, the server closest to the user's request is the one that responds. ), today unveiled its advanced geo-location functionality - EdgeScape(SM) Pro - giving content providers, online advertising companies, application service providers, and Internet infrastructure providers a powerful source of anonymous end-user data that will benefit both visitors and providers. Available as an independent service or as part of Akamai's integrated EdgeSuite(SM) offering, EdgeScape Pro, which builds on Akamai's EdgeScape service released in July 2000, characterizes individual IP addresses by measured throughput and geo-location to the city-level, allowing both the delivery of customized content and the more effective use of bandwidth. Web and application developers can also benefit from the functionality by integrating the EdgeScape Pro database to enhance their own applications and services.

Among the customers of Akamai's geo-location technology are BURST!Media, The MTVi Group, Predictive Networks, Royal Caribbean, TV.TV, and WebTrends.

"At BURST!, we work with advertisers to assure that their advertising reaches the right audience, in the right place, at the right time," said Dave Stein, chief technology officer and co-founder of BURST!Media, a leading advertising network for specialty-content Web publishers. "In addition to country and state data, Akamai provides us with the ability to do targeting based on MSA (Metropolitan Service Area) An urban area with at least 50,000 people plus surrounding counties. Content providers, online advertising companies, application service providers, and Internet infrastructure providers can benefit from EdgeScape Pro's ability to determine the U.S. and select international cities from which end users are accessing Web sites. In addition, the breadth of the Akamai network allows EdgeScape Pro to identify an end user's actual measured throughput and enable the selective delivery of high bandwidth content to users whose connection can support it.

Akamai correlates geographic and network information to IP addresses, enabling the customization of content without compromising end user privacy. As part of Akamai's integrated EdgeSuite offering, EdgeScape Pro assists the delivery of customized, dynamic content through the construction of Web pages from component pieces that can be targeted and delivered from locations optimized for each end user. As an independent service, EdgeScape Pro is easily implemented and the data is automatically and continuously updated, ensuring that customers always have access to accurate, up-to-date information. Akamai also leverages relationships with more than 470 network partners and looks to continually enhance the EdgeScape Pro database as the Akamai network grows. EdgeScape Pro:
-- Delivers detailed geographic U.S. and select international city codes to
