(ISPs). Participating ISPs, who team with Akamai to improve network performance and increase subscriber satisfaction, may now elect to receive free Usenet access and delivery, powered by the Loral CyberStar global satellite network, as well as take advantage of advanced network performance and monitoring tools from Akamai. Akamai will make these value-added offerings available to all interested ISPs at no cost.

"By expanding our AANP program to a wider group of ISPs, Akamai is accelerating the pace by which we deploy servers at the edge of the Internet while increasing Akamai's value proposition to ISPs," said Avi Freedman, Akamai's vice president of network architecture. "As we add potentially thousands of additional networks to our global footprint, we are furthering the unprecedented scalability, reliability and performance of our content delivery capabilities."

Announced earlier this week at ISPCON, Loral CyberStar will make available free Usenet newsfeeds to all ISPs within the Akamai Accelerated Network Partner program. ISPs can now off-load the high volumes of Usenet traffic, freeing up as much as 12 Mbps of network connectivity.

With today's news, Akamai has also outlined plans to provide ISPs with weekly data reports that will enable ISPs to analyze their network's performance. Akamai will use a series of advanced network monitoring and performance tools to conduct analyses within the following two areas:

Network Monitoring

--Amount of inbound and outbound traffic served

--Real and historical data on server performance

--95th percentile and average bandwidth utilization (allows ISPs to monitor bandwidth savings and improve dynamic mapping configuration)

Performance

--ISP performance in relation to back-bone networks

--Measurement of end user connectivity to back-bone networks

--Evaluation of points within the Network where additional bandwidth is needed

To date, Akamai has attracted ISPs from around the world as part of its program to co-locate Akamai edge servers within ISP (1) See in-system programmable.

points-of-presence (POPs). By placing servers close to end users inside an ISP network, Akamai enables ISPs to reduce the amount of bandwidth needed to deliver requested Web pages including rich content, streaming media and software downloads. As a result, much of the world's most popular content, from hundreds of heavily-trafficked Web sites using Akamai's service, will reside in an ISP's network.
