Ajinomoto to count carbon on frozen food packaging.

Japan's Ajinomoto Co. reportedly plans as early as next year to introduce labels showing the total amount of carbon dioxide carbon dioxide, chemical compound, CO2, a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that is about one and one-half times as dense as air under ordinary conditions of temperature and pressure.  emissions from production and distribution of its frozen foods and other products.

In cooperation with retailer Aeon Co., Dai Nippon Printing Dai Nippon Printing (大日本印刷 Dai Nippon Insatsu  Co. and can manufacturer Toyo Seikan Kaisha Ltd., Ajinomoto will track emissions generated from the point of production through disposal. This will include not only emissions associated with the food itself, but also packaging, transport and other processing steps. The calculations will also account for the post-purchase recycling recycling, the process of recovering and reusing waste products—from household use, manufacturing, agriculture, and business—and thereby reducing their burden on the environment.  of packaging material in estimating the carbon footprint A carbon footprint is the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases emitted over the full life cycle of a product or service. .

Tracking emissions from the production stage is difficult for most processed foods, considering they use numerous ingredients. That's why emissions labeling will first be limited to seasonings, which have relatively few ingredients, and some frozen food products.
