The resource-rich province has two major cities, Samarinda (the capital and a center for timber product) and Balikpapan (a petroleum center with oil , Indonesia.

PT YMM will initially provide voice and video conferencing services to subscribers in the Tengarong area of the Kutai province. The voice and video conferencing services will be expanded to cover all subscribers in the region by the end of the first quarter of 2003, with and more than 3,000 subscribers to be serviced in the first phase of the deployment.

With the teledensity in the Kutai province low, demand for these voice, data and video conferencing services is high, therefore creating an opportunity for network expansion to serve an additional 10,000 subscribers as part of the initial rollout.

"Airspan provides an ideal solution for our deployment of voice service to serve the underserved markets in Indonesia," said Ahmad Djajadiningrat, Marketing Director, PT Yuta Mitra Mandiri. "The initial project targets a community where phone service has been difficult to provide in an economic fashion using traditional wireline techniques. We anticipate a rapid roll-out and envision a number of similar projects throughout the various provinces. Teledensity in Indonesia is less than 5 percent which provides a tremendous opportunity for scale with a product line that covers both voice and data."

Airspan's country manager, Kiki Harsiki, commented on the significance of this project.

"We are very excited to be involved with PT Yuta Mitra Mandiri in this project providing voice services to the local population in the Kutai region as many of its residents have never had access to their own telephone," said Harsiki. "We view this project as a key component in increasing the teledensity level within Indonesia."
