Airport upgrade in Westchester.

A ground breaking ceremony was held recently to mark the start of construction of a new terminal at the Westchester County Airport. Lehrer McGovern Bovis is serving as program manager for the modernization project.

The modernization program includes the replacement of the existing over-crowded and outdated World War II Quonset hut terminal with a modern and convenient passenger terminal, along with new access roadways for safe and efficient vehicular movement into airport parking facilities.

The terminal complex will also include state-of-the-art facilities for airport rescue/fire fighting, and for maintaining ground handling equipment (the vehicles used to service aircraft). The terminal complex has- been designed using distinctive elements and permanent materials, such as green copper roofs and textured brick walls, for the purpose of creating an attractive and modern "Gateway to Westchester. " For travelers and greeters, the multi-lane frontage road will ease passenger drop-off at the terminal. Curbside baggage check-in will be available.

The new terminal building will include the latest in computerized passenger check-in and security facilities, baggage handling and flight information systems, and new rental car facilities, all for the convenience of the traveling public. Modern seating areas and air conditioned boarding ramps to the aircraft will be provided for passenger comfort. Additional terminal amenities will include a restaurant, observation deck with airfield view, bank, newsstand, and snack bar. All aspects of the building have been designed to be fully accessible to people with disabilities.
