Airport launches direct flight to Cuba.

The new board of directors at the Greater Sudbury Greater Sudbury (2006 census population 157,857) is a city in Northern Ontario, Canada. Greater Sudbury was created in 2001 by amalgamating the cities and towns of the former Regional Municipality of Sudbury, along with several previously unincorporated geographic townships.  Airport has implemented an innovative business strategy with a focus on enhanced services for tenants and providing direct flights to sunny southern destinations.

In July 2004, the Sudbury Airport Sudbury Airport or Greater Sudbury Airport, (IATA: YSB, ICAO: CYSB), is an airport in the Canadian city of Greater Sudbury, Ontario and is located 11 nautical miles (20.  Community Development Corporation (SACDC), made up of two Sudbury development officers and seven businesspeople with an interest in aviation, began setting a new business course.

They have put a concerted effort into expanding business and moving customer service forward through revenues collected by the airport.

Donald William 'Bob' Johnston (born 14 May 1932, Hillsboro, Texas) is a noted American record producer, best known for his work with Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, Willie Nelson and many Nashville recording artists, as

That said, the board has to ensure the operation runs at a profit while maintaining runways, the terminal and other infrastructure.

In addition, it also has to continue meeting tenant and customer needs.

"Just in the last three years we must have infused about $10 million into the airport." Johnston says.

With the assistance of Transport Canada's Airport Capital Assistance Program. SACDC was able to spend $3.5 million on a resurfacing project for crosswind cross·wind

Apart from the federal funding, the SACDC board came up with $700,000 to build the new apron three area south of the commercial air terminal building. The site is home to Platinum Aviation, Northern Aviation Services and other private or non-commercial passenger companies requiring maintenance.

The apron was completed last month, just in time for the second-annual aviation celebration held Sept. 17. An invitation went out to all private pilots across North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  to join in the "hanger party." It was a chance to network and try to identify new opportunities, Johnston explains.

Daily commercial flights are the lion's share of the business, but the board is also looking at charter operations.

"We have entered into a deal with Sun Wing Vacations and we will be starting a direct flight Dec. 21 to Varadero, Cuba."

It certainly has to be supported by the community, Johnston says. The board's role is to come up with local opportunities for customers and the North's role is to support the endeavor, he says.

Service will reach beyond Sudbury, since many people (throughout the North) drive to Toronto Pearson International Airport to fly south.

"We are hoping people will drive from Timmins, North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie Sault Sainte Marie — pronounced "Soo Saint Marie" (IPA /su seɪnt məˈɹi/) — is the name of two cities on the Saint Marys River, which forms part of the boundary between the United States and Canada.  (to Sudbury)."

A marketing campaign is being developed and bookings are taking place.
