Berlin airport

Mother Of All Airports Faces Uncertain Future. A vast open space almost the size of New York's Central Park, complete with one of the world's biggest buildings, might be a sought-after asset in the heart of any other metropolis. But in Berlin, a city where space is plentiful and property cheap by European standards, the huge Tempelhof airport with its imposing terminal threatens to pose a problem for city authorities when it is closed to air traffic next year. No one seems to know what to do with the giant, outdated site which holds a special place in Berliners' hearts: it was here that Allied Dakotas and Skymasters landed every few minutes in 1948 and 1949 to supply the city during the Soviet blockade. The question of what to do with Tempelhof when the few flights it still deals with are redirected next year ahead of the opening of a new city airport is complicated by its historical and architectural significance. London Heathrow

London Heathrow T5 is coming along very well with the main structure now complete and the internal finish well on the way. BAA is keen to remind everyone that it is on budget and on time. Perhaps the most impressive feature is the sheer size of the place 1210 ft x 557 ft, that is 50 soccer pitches. Another comparison is the wonderful wrought iron St. Pancras Station, soon to be the home of Eurostar. That building, massive in its day, is only 689 ft long and 240 ft wide. The new complex is due to open operationally at 0400 on Sunday 30 March 2008. British Airways is 45% of Heathrow's passenger business, 67m in total the last calendar year, and is the sole occupier of the complex. The main terminal A and concourse B, the first satellite, have a capacity of 30m. Concourse C, due to open in 2011 will add another 5m. All are linked by an underground people mover system. http://www.heathrowairport.com/portal/site/default/menuitem.2f4d5e2800e51acc0fb42410c02865a0 Aug 5, 2006
