 remained the most active local carrier, with 11.3 million passengers.

American Airlines American Airlines

Major U.S. airline. American was created through a merger of several smaller U.S. airlines and incorporated in 1934. It continued to buy the routes of other airlines, becoming an international carrier in the 1970s; its routes include South America, the
 claimed the No. 2 spot, which last year was held by United Airlines. American American, river, 30 mi (48 km) long, rising in N central Calif. in the Sierra Nevada and flowing SW into the Sacramento River at Sacramento. The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill (see Sutter, John Augustus) along the river in 1848 led to the California gold rush of  increased its passenger count at the county's three commercial airports to 9.9 million, up 600,000 passengers while United saw its local share fall by 850,000 passengers.

JetBlue Airways is a major American low-cost airline owned by JetBlue Airways Corporation (NASDAQ: JBLU).
 moved up two spots to No. 7 after seeing its passenger total increase by 400,000 to 2.4 million. The Forest Hills, N.Y.-based airline started serving the local market through Long Beach in 2001 and added flights at Bob Hope Airport Bob Hope Airport (IATA: BUR, ICAO: KBUR, FAA LID: BUR) is a regional and national airport located in Burbank, California, United States.

It was formerly known as United Airport (1930-1934); Union Air Terminal (1934-1940);
 in Burbank Burbank, city (1990 pop. 93,643), Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1911. Tourism and the entertainment industry are central to its economy; several motion-picture studios and television headquarters are here. Burbank's aerospace industry collapsed with the end of the Cold War.  in 2005.

American Trans Air lost its place on the list. The Indianapolis-based carrier filed for bankruptcy bankruptcy, in law, settlement of the liabilities of a person or organization wholly or partially unable to meet financial obligations. The purposes are to distribute, through a court-appointed receiver, the bankrupt's assets equitably among creditors and, in most  in October October: see month.  2004 and severely reduced its routes through LAX.

The 25 busiest airlines handled 62 million passengers in L.A. County during 2005, accounting for 90 percent of all commercial airline traffic. They also transported nearly 750,000 tons (Transparent Optical Networking Services) A marketing term for providing dark fiber to a customer. Total passenger traffic at the county's three commercial airports--Los Angeles International, Bob Hope and Long Beach--rose to 70 million, up 3 percent from the previous year.

SOUTHWEST AIRLINES

FOR the third consecutive year, the Dallas-based carrier tops the list of the busiest airlines in L.A. County. The regional line flew 11.3 million passengers through Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  International and Bob Hope airports, up 800,000 from the previous year. Its market share grew by 0.6 percent to 16.2 percent of all commercial arrivals and departures.

About two-thirds of Southwest's local passengers traveled through LAX, with the balance flying through Bob Hope Airport in Burbank.

In an effort to speed travel through LAX, the airline has worked closely with officials at the airport and the Transportation Security Administration. "TSA TSA

 has focused on staffing issues at LAX," said Johnson.
