ASTA has filed consumer-friendly comments with the Department of Transportation (DOT) to update the 20-year old DOT rules on how airlines compensate passengers denied boarding. ASTA wants the airlines to double the compensation for involuntarily bumped passengers. "ASTA's recommendations, if implemented, would reduce the number of instances in which airline passengers are involuntarily bumped and, in the event that an airline is forced to bump a passenger, create a more stable and acceptable process for doing so," said Cheryl Hudak, ASTA president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. List of U.S. states considering passengers' rights legislation grows. Several states across the country have announced their intentions to implement laws that would require airlines to provide things such as food, water and working restrooms to passengers during lengthy tarmac delays. Now, some lawmakers in the state of Washington are making a push for a law to protect airline passengers' rights. Several carriers have already spoken out against the Washington legislation, saying that their customer service policies are adequate. Airlines and the Air Transport Association have spoken out against legislation in other states as well as a federal passenger rights bill, while arguing that only the federal government has the right to regulate the industry. Meanwhile, oil prices soared past $100 a barrel before dropping to about $88 a barrel. Airlines' doubling of fuel surcharge fails to take hold. A doubling of the fuel surcharge tacked onto most tickets by American Airlines and other carriers appeared to flop Tuesday, the second straight unsuccessful effort by airlines to boost the fee. American last week raised its fuel surcharge to $40 from $20 for many round-trip flights, and over the weekend other carriers went along. But by Monday, Northwest Airlines Corp. had began a gradual retreat, which forced other airlines to also drop the fee, according to according to

. The increase marks the industry's third attempt in as many weeks to raise fees to offset high fuel prices. The previous two attempts -- one led by United Airlines and the other by American -- were initially matched by other major airlines but failed to hold after consumers resisted the higher fees. In the last few days, American Airlines parent AMR, United Airlines owner UAL, and Delta Air Lines all posted fourth-quarter losses because of high fuel costs. Continental was a rare exception. It posted a pre-tax profit in the fourth quarter, boosted by its strong international route network. Jan 27, 2008

More airlines double fuel surcharges. UAL Corp.'s United Airlines, Delta Air Lines Inc. and Continental Airlines Inc. doubled their round-trip fuel surcharges in most U.S. markets to $40, matching an increase by AMR Corp.'s American Airlines. The fee, a response to rising fuel costs, was $20 round-trip before the increase by American Thursday. Delta added the charge late last week and was joined Friday by Continental and United. The surcharge covers business and leisure fares while excluding flights in direct competition with low-fare airlines. Friday's moves mean the surcharge is now in place at the four biggest U.S. airlines by passenger traffic, led by American, the world's largest. Jet fuel has surged 57% in the past year, topping labor as some carriers' largest expense. Jan 21, 2008

US Airways

US Airways has revamped its flight schedules and fixed a glitch-prone reservations system that made it one of the worst airlines in on-time performance last year. In November, it posted its best on-time performance of the year. During the quarter US Airways recalled 200 furloughed flight attendants. It also added seven more Airbus A330-200s in the quarter to an existing order for widebody jets. The aircraft will be used to support the carrier's plans to grow its international service. Company officials said in the first quarter, they will pay out $49 million in profit sharing profit sharing, arrangement by which employees receive, in addition to their wages, a share of the net profits of a business. US Airways

High fuel prices, competition, has airlines looking to consolidate. As U.S. airlines pressure each other with low fares, executives are keeping an eye on consolidation efforts as the one sure way to squeeze profits out of an industry plagued by sky high fuel costs. Many carriers have tried to boost profits by offering travelers fewer seats. But US Airways Group Chairman and Chief Executive Doug Parker said Thursday that airlines only have so much capacity left to trim on their own, probably less than 5 percent. US Airways posted its first loss in five quarters, its shares dropped 29 cents, or 2 percent, to $12.85 in afternoon trading. Jan 24, 2008
