Airline News - Latin America / Caribbean.Oct 16, 2006 Caribbean Star Airlines, LIAT LIAT - Leeward Islands Air Transport Caribbean Star Airlines and LIAT said this week that they plan to "commence formal negotiations toward the merger of the two carriers" following a decision by the LIAT board. Caribbean Star Chairman R. Allen Stanford said the tie-up "could eventually become the most modern and efficient airline in the Caribbean." A joint statement issued by the two airlines said a merger "represents the kind of bold and creative approach needed to make a difference in the area of regional air transportation which to date has been characterized by significant failure." LIAT operates 13 Dash 8-100s/-200s/-300s and serves 20 Caribbean destinations. Caribbean Star has a fleet of 20 Dash 8s including two Q300s and flies to 14 Caribbean cities in partnership with sister carrier Caribbean Sun Airlines.
