International passenger airline based in London. In 1936 British Airways Ltd. was founded through the merger of three smaller airlines.

British Airways has a new maximum bag weight policy that is good news for economy class passengers and will not make much difference for clients in the premier areas. The maximum weight per bag for everyone is now 23 kg (up from 20 kg in Y class), but on very specific occasions and only for exceptional items (e.g. some musical instruments, filming equipment, etc.) when a customer has informed BA 24 hours in advance of check-in that they have a piece which is heavier than 23 kg the airline will try to accommodate, and will charge. On most routes 23 kg is the maximum in Y class but for US, Canada, Caribbean, Mexico, Brazil, Nigeria even people paying the lowest fare can take two bags up to 23 kg each, due to local regulations. Everyone gets a chance to take a piece of sporting equipment with them free of charge, regardless of the class they fly in. No animals may be taken into the cabin, only guide dogs. http://www.ba.com Jun 17, 2006

Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic has joined forces with UK Sport to launch a unique scheme that will help Britain's top medal hopefuls train and compete on the world stage in the coming years. Called the 'Flying Start' initiative it will offer 450 of Britain's elite athletes a range of 'added value' travel benefits, including flight discounts, a dedicated booking line, excess baggage waivers, lounge access and upgrades. Athletes often spend long periods of time overseas preparing for key events, so travel support is essential. The Virgin Atlantic package is worth up to [pounds sterling]1m over the next 12 months in a deal intended to be extended for future years. All 450 athletes are part of UK Sport's World Class Podium Program, which supports athletes with realistic European, World, and Olympic and Paralympic medal capabilities. In tandem with the UK Sport partnership, Virgin Atlantic has separately selected 12 young rising stars across a range of sports that have been identified as future gold medal prospects. These athletes will receive an enhanced package of benefits and will also help launch an onboard fitness program for Virgin Atlantic travelers. http://www.virgin-atlantic.com Jun 17, 2006
