Airline News - Asia / Pacific.Dec 31, 2006 Mesa Air Group, Shenzhen Airlines Mesa Air Group signed an agreement with Shenzhen Airlines to create a Chinese regional carrier, yet to be named, that is expected to begin service within the next year operating 50-seat regional jets. Mesa said last spring it was looking to expand to the Chinese mainland. The deal is the first of its kind for any US regional. Shenzhen will have a 51% stake in the new carrier with an investment of $32.6 million. Mesa will invest $31.3 million for the remaining stake, according to Merrill Lynch. It also increased its 777-200 service to Paris Charles de Gaulle to daily from five-times-weekly and added a sixth weekly 747-400 flight to Los Angeles via Taipei, two weekly 737-400 flights to Hanoi (now nine) and two to Cebu Cebu (1990 pop. 610,417), the second (after Manila) most important harbor and city in the Philippines. With its excellent port, which handles both interisland and overseas shipping, it is the trade and manufacturing center of the Visayan Islands.
