Airfares Soar Significantly for Thanksgiving Travel, New AAA Survey Shows.

The largest increases were reported in the following roundtrip routes: St. Louis-Washington, up 209 percent; San Francisco-Los Angeles, up 69 percent; and Philadelphia-Miami, up 44 percent. Biggest decreases were reported in these routes: Philadelphia-Seattle, down 29 percent and Denver to Boston, down 26 percent.

Peak holiday travel dates include Tuesday, Nov. 21; Wednesday, Nov. 22; Sunday, Nov. 26; and Monday, Nov. 27. For the upcoming Christmas holiday, peak travel times are Friday, Dec. 22; Saturday, Dec. 23; Tuesday, Dec. 26; Wednesday, Dec. 27.

"However, airlines in the past have offered some last minute fares to fill seats during off-peak times such as the afternoon and evening of Thanksgiving day and the Saturday after Thanksgiving," Hughes added.

The Thanksgiving and Christmas-New Year's holidays are the two busiest air travel periods of the year.
