The drop in airfares led to a 6 percent decrease in the AAA Leisure Travel Index, which reflects the sum of a monthly national average for airfares, lodging and car rental rates. The monthly index fell $24.18 to $381.84 in December. In November, the combined national average for leisure travel was $406.02. In October, it was $405.88; September, $411.40; August, $392.98; July, $409.47; and June, $403.10. Car rental rates declined $2.92 in December to an average $38.17 nationally, a 7.1 percent decrease from November's $41.09. Lodging rates increased 81 cents to $129.82 in December, up less than 1 percent from November's $129.01. For the last six months roundtrip leisure airfares averaged: November, $235.92; October, $232.98; September, $238.15; August, $223.04; July, $243.93; and June $233.85. During the same time average leisure car rental rates were: November, $41.09; October, $39.08; September, $36.53; August, $37.33; July, $40.17; and June, $40.17. Average lodging rates during the last six months were: November, $129.01; October, $133.82; September, $136.72; August, $132.61; July, $125.37; and June, $129.08. The December report is based on data from more than 12,000 AAA two- and three-diamond lodging room a room in which a person lodges, esp. a hired room. The software used in the survey was designed specifically for AAA by Galileo International(R) for use with the Apollo(R) computer reservation system. Leisure travel usually requires an advance purchase; travel during off-peak hours; and a minimum stay, such as a Saturday night stay. Airfares include sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government. but not other charges. Lodging and car rental rates do not include taxes or other fees.
