Airfares Dip, But Still Higher Than Last Year, AAA Says.

AAA's Leisure Travel Index shows that the July national average for leisure travel airfares decreased 5 percent since last month to $267.69; however, that figure is still higher than last July's rate of $243.93.

The Leisure Travel Index measures the national average costs of leisure travel in three areas: airfares, car rental rates and lodging Lodging or holiday accommodation is a type of accommodation. People who travel and stay away from home for more than a day need lodging mainly for sleeping. Other purposes are safety, shelter from cold and rain, having a place to store luggage and being able to take a  rates. Together those costs totaled $436.95 for July, down 2 percent from last month, but 7 percent higher than last July.

Lodging rates rose 1 percent to $131.55 since last month and are nearly 5 percent higher than the same time period last year. Car rental rates rose during July to $37.71, up 6 percent over June, but decreased more than 6 percent from last July.

For the last six months leisure travel costs averaged: June, $446.40; May, $410.60; April, $403.16; March, $436.99; February, $420.69; and January, $382.61.

National averages for leisure airfares for the last six months were: June, $280.56; May, $242.18; April, $227.60; March, $263.57; February, $246.94; and January, $212.76.

During the same time, average lodging rates were: June, $130.18; May, $132.17; April, $137.20; March, $135.97; February, $135.62; and January, $131.91.

For the last six months, leisure rates for car rentals averaged: June, $35.67; May, $36.25; April, $38.36; March, $37.45; February, $38.13; and January, $37.94.

The July report is based on data from nearly 8,000 AAA Two- and Three-Diamond lodging room a room in which a person lodges, esp. a hired room.

The software used in the survey was designed specifically for AAA by Galileo International(R) for use with the Apollo(R) computer reservation system.

Leisure travel usually requires an advance purchase; travel during off-peak hours; and a minimum stay, such as a Saturday night stay. Airfares include sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  but not other charges. Lodging and car rental rates do not include taxes or other fees.
