Airfares Continue to Lead Hike in Travel Costs, AAA Says.

The monthly AAA Leisure Travel Index shows the combined national average cost for airfares, lodging and car rental rates in March was $436.99, up $16.30 from $420.69 in February.

 leisure airfares increased nearly 7 percent in the last month to a national average of $263.57. The national average cost of a roundtrip leisure airline ticket rose $16.63 from last month's $246.94. Rising jet fuel costs continue to be blamed for ticket price increases.

Lodging rates climbed just 35 cents in one month to average $135.97. Average lodging rates have risen each month for the last five months. Car rental rates averaged $37.45, a 68-cent drop from last month.

For the last six months leisure travel costs averaged: February, 420.69; January, 382.61; December, 381.82; November, 406.02; October, 405.88; and September, 411.40.

National averages for leisure airfares for the last six months were: February, 246.94; January, $212.76; December, $213.85; November, $235.92; October, $232.98; and September, $238.15.

During the same time, average lodging rates were: February, $135.62; January, $131.91; December, $129.82; November, $129.01; October, $133.82; and September, $136.72.

For the last six months, leisure rates for car rentals averaged: February,$38.13; January $37.94; December, $38.17; November, $41.09; October, $39.08; and September, $36.53.

The March report is based on data from more than 14,500 AAA two- and three-diamond lodging room a room in which a person lodges, esp. a hired room.

The software used in the survey was designed specifically for AAA by Galileo International(R)for use with the Apollo(R)computer reservation system.

Leisure travel usually requires an advance purchase; travel during off-peak hours; and a minimum stay, such as a Saturday night stay. Airfares include sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  but not other charges. Lodging and car rental rates do not include taxes or other fees.
