System Brings Mobility to Campus for

Improved Student Education, Medical Research, and Patient Care

Airespace, Inc. announced today that Weill Medical College of Cornell University Cornell University, mainly at Ithaca, N.Y.; with land-grant, state, and private support; coeducational; chartered 1865, opened 1868. It was named for Ezra Cornell, who donated $500,000 and a tract of land. With the help of state senator Andrew D.  has chosen Airespace to deliver secure and reliable Wireless LAN A local area network that transmits over the air typically in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz unlicensed frequency band. It does not require line of sight between sender and receiver. Wireless base stations (access points) are wired to an Ethernet network and transmit a radio frequency over an area  (WLAN) services to students, teachers, and other faculty across their Manhattan campus. The Airespace Wireless Enterprise Platform is currently being deployed in libraries, conference rooms, laboratories, and lecture halls throughout Cornell University Medical College, providing secure and reliable wireless services that enhance the educational process, facilitate medical research, and improve patient care through anytime, anywhere access to real-time information.

"Cornell University Medical College firmly believes that secure wireless networking See wireless network.  is a critical component of the infrastructure needed to deliver the finest education possible for medical students and to fostering a stimulating and enriching environment for cutting edge research," said Dr. Steven Erde, Director, Office of Academic Computing at Cornell University Medical College. "We chose Airespace as a strategic partner for WLAN services because they delivered a highly reliable, secure WLAN platform that satisfied our stringent wireless networking and security requirements."

Cornell University Medical College's WLAN network consists of several Airespace 4100 WLAN Appliances and is expected to grow to approximately 200 Airespace 1200 Access Points. It is managed centrally using Airespace Control System (ACS (Asynchronous Communications Server) See network access server. ) Software, which provides real-time monitoring, configuration, and management of the entire Airespace WLAN system. Cornell University Medical College is also using the Airespace Wireless Protection System (WPS See Windows Printing System and Workplace Shell.

) for complete WLAN security. With WPS, the Medical College's IT staff can create robust security policies that leverage existing wireline security and directory tools, including: LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) A protocol used to access a directory listing. LDAP support is implemented in Web browsers and e-mail programs, which can query an LDAP-compliant directory. , RADIUS, MAC filtering, and 802.1x. Customized access control, filtering, and encryption policies can be applied to individual users. These security policies are applied at login, and will follow users as they roam anywhere throughout Cornell University Medical College's campus.

"On the one hand, we needed to absolutely protect our network from random people trying to get unauthorized access," said Dr. Erde. "On the other hand, we required a flexible WLAN that was easy to deploy and manage. Airespace was the only WLAN system we evaluated that could satisfy both of these objectives simultaneously and in a cost effective manner."

"The Airespace WLAN system was designed from the ground up to provide the highest level of WLAN security, without compromising ease of use," said Alan Cohen cohen
