This is an updated and expanded edition of a textbook on aircraft design. Raymer (president, Conceptual Research Corporation) places equal emphasis on design layout and design analysis. In the first half of the book, covering layout, he offers chapters on the design process; sizing from a conceptual sketch; airfoil and geometry selection; thrust-to-weight ratio Thrust-to-weight ratio is, as its name suggests, the ratio of instantaneous thrust to weight (where weight means weight at the Earth’s surface). It is a dimensionless parameter characteristic of rockets and jet engines, and of vehicles propelled by such engines (typically  and wing loading wing loading

In a network packet, headers are appended to the payload for transport and then discarded at their destination. ; propulsion and fuel system integration; and landing gear and subsystems. The second half moves on to analysis, covering aerodynamics aerodynamics, study of gases in motion. As the principal application of aerodynamics is the design of aircraft, air is the gas with which the science is most concerned. ; propulsion; structures and loads; weights; stability, control, and handling qualities; performance and flight mechanics; cost analysis; sizing and trade studies; vertical flight; and extremes of flight. Raymer also presents chapters on the design of unique aircraft concepts and conceptual design examples.
