Compass Airlines, Northwest Airlines

Compass Airlines, a wholly owned regional subsidiary of Northwest Airlines, will build a $9.85 million aircraft maintenance facility at Louisville International Airport. The complex will provide scheduled maintenance for the carrier's new fleet of 76-seat Embraer E-175s and employ up to 70 workers when completed next year. Louisville was selected because of its proximity to Northwest hubs in Minneapolis and Memphis, according to company officials. Sep 17, 2007

GE Equipment Services

GE Equipment Services recently announced the introduction of VeriWise Rail and VeriWise Intermodal, two remote asset management solutions that the company says are designed to provide customers with on-demand visibility into the status of their fleet and the cargo it carries. GE's VeriWise technology is already in service on more than 150,000 transportation assets in North America and Europe, providing decision support data directly to cargo shippers and carriers. The tool helps to enhance safety and security, improve shipment delivery cycles and increase supply chain productivity. Sep 19, 2007

General Electric

GE will work with DARPA to explore the use of crop oils such as canola and soybean as alternative fuels for aircraft. The 18-month, $3 million program's goal is to develop the technology needed to make a cheaper alternative to petroleum-based jet fuel, GE says. The rising costs of petroleum-based fuels are a concern to military and civilian jet operators. Sep 21, 2007

Honeywell, Airbus

Honeywell, Airbus partner on A350. Honeywell International Inc. said Sept. 19 it will provide the major mechanical systems for Airbus' new long-range, wide-body A350 aircraft. The contract is expected to generate more than $16 billion in revenue over 20 to 25 years. Honeywell said the contract is the largest systems and equipment package Airbus has awarded to date on this program. As part of the deal, Honeywell will design and build an auxiliary power unit and other equipment that supply pneumatic and electric power for the aircraft while on the ground or in-flight. The company will also build systems to manage all of the air used on the aircraft. Sep 20, 2007

Lufthansa Systems launched Lido electronic Aircraft Performance Monitoring, a Web-based tool for determination of inflight performance levels of an aircraft and especially its propulsion and flight control efficiency. Sep 19, 2007

Lufthansa Technik, Rolls-Royce

N3 Engine Overhaul Services, the Lufthansa Technik Rolls-Royce engine maintenance joint venture, officially opened its new facility in Thuringia, Germany, Friday. LHT and Rolls have invested around [euro]100 million ($139 million) in the N3 site, which will overhaul Trent 500, 700 and 900 engines powering the A340-500/600, A330 and A380 respectively. N3 received EASA Part 145 approval in April. It employs 270, a figure that is expected to rise to 500 by 2010. Sep 17, 2007

Pemco Aviation Group, Pemco World Air Services

Pemco Aviation Group closed the previously announced sale of Pemco World Air Services, its commercial division specializing in MRO and passenger-to-freighter conversions, to an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners for $43 million. The sale was approved by Pemco's stockholders earlier this week. As part of the transaction, Pemco Aviation Group changed its name to Alabama Aircraft Industries and said it will focus on defense work. PWAS will retain its name. "Our commercial division has been a great asset to Pemco Aviation Group over many years, but it is time for our company to focus on growing our military business," President and CEO Ron Aramini said. Qatar Airways, Thales Training

A J Walter Aviation will help Thales Training and Simulation support customers of its flight simulators by providing maintenance and spare parts supply of aircraft avionics and instruments fitted to the simulators. Initially, Thales will use the service to support its contract to maintain Qatar Airways' three C2000X simulators for the Airbus A320, A330 and Boeing 777. Sep 20, 2007

Rockwell Collins

Rockwell Collins said it is adding several new features to its Airshow 4200 moving map display and flight information system. The additions provide passengers with an upgraded system with a complete new Atlas Style Map Set, more details on existing maps, and new features including a World Clock page and a Flight Deck Instrument Panel page. Shanxi Aircraft

Shanxi Aircraft Industry Group, a subsidiary of AVIC II, signed a framework agreement at the Beijing Air Show yesterday with Antonov to establish an aircraft engineering center in the Chinese capital by year end. SAIG MD Bai Songbai said that the center will be engaged mainly in retrofits of Y8 aircraft in its initial phase. Sep 20, 2007

Snecma Services, Safran Group

Safran Group announced that Snecma Services Chairman and CEO Jean-Lin Fournereaux, 55, will be nominated as chairman and CEO of Sagem Defense Securite at a board meeting scheduled for Sept. 27. He will replace Jean-Paul Herteman. Succeeding Fournereaux, who has led Snecma Services since early 2004, is Denis Vercherin, 54, currently senior VP of Hispano-Suiza. Sep 20, 2007
