Specific privileges granted to holders of a flight instructor certificate vary from country to country, but very generally, a flight instructor serves to enhance or evaluate the knowledge and skill level of an  means fewer pilots trained, and that is already being felt by the airlines. "We're going to have a situation where there's not enough pilots being put into the system to sustain the system," says Kit Darby, president of Atlanta, Gerogia-based pilot career service AIR. "We've already seen airlines have to cancel a few flights at the end of the month when they've used up their reserves." Jul 2, 2007

Airbus, Boeing

If Boeing has been rocked by this week's stack of new plane deals announced by rival Airbus, it certainly isn't showing it. Airbus unveiled deals involving over 700 planes including more than 300 firm orders, edging ahead of the US company which entered this week's Paris air show The Paris Air Show (Salon International de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace, Paris-Le Bourget) is an international trade fair for the aerospace business. It is held at Le Bourget airport near Paris, France every odd year, alternating both with the Farnborough International  well ahead. Boeing took its firm order book for the year to 510 planes, for an increase of 81, led by a deal for 63 from influential lessor International Lease Finance Corporation. Airbus had a net of 188 planes beforehand and leaves the show at about 519, by Reuters estimates. "I think what it really says is 'We're back'," said Airbus Chief Commercial Officer John Leahy John Leahy (born August 1950) was appointed Chief Operating Officer at Airbus in July 2005. Leahy continues as Airbus' Chief Commercial Officer, a role he has held since August 1994. He is a member of the Airbus main board of management. . American Airlines yesterday announced it will accelerate deliveries of six Boeing 737-800s into the first half of 2009 in order to speed up replacement of its fuel thirsty MD-80s. Three months ago it said it would bring forward the delivery of 47 737-800s including three scheduled for 2016 delivery to 2009. It now plans to take nine aircraft in 2009 under its existing purchase agreement with Boeing. Jun 29, 2007

American Airlines, Boeing

American Airlines said it has moved up the delivery of six additional Boeing 737-800 aircraft into the first half of 2009. The carrier said in March it pulled forward the delivery of 47 Boeing 737-800 aircraft under a previously existing purchase commitment with Boeing. American intends eventually to replace its 300 aging, gas-guzzling McDonnell-Douglas MD-80s. The MD-80 is no longer manufactured and consumes 10 to 15 percent more fuel than the 737 models due to its older powerpalnts. The airline industry has been battered by high fuel costs in recent years, and fleet replacement is becoming a higher priority as newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft models emerge. Jun 29, 2007

Boeing

Boeing, on Sunday July 8 (070807) rolled out the first of its new 787 DreamLiner at its Everett, Seattle, plant in front of 15,000 staff, customers and suppliers, and a worldwide audience of millions. The company will not put a date on the first flight except to say "when the engineers are ready," but it can perhaps be read as early September with lead airline All Nippon Airways airways Anatomy The 'pipes'–trachea, bronchi, bronchioles–through which air passes to and from the alveoli. Boeing

There are three Boeing 787 models. The 787-8 DreamLiner will carry 210-250 passengers on routes of 7,650 to 8,200nm (14,200 to 15,200km), while the 787-9 DreamLiner has space for 250-290 passengers on stage lengths of 8,000 to 8,500nm (14,800 to 15,750km). A third 787 family member, the 787-3, will accommodate 290-330 passengers and is essentially for routes in the 2,500 to 3,000nm range (4,600 to 5,650km). Jul 8, 2007

Boeing is working with interested customers to define the very long range 787-10, which has yet to be launched. It would need to fly London - Sydney, nonstop HP's brand name for its fault-tolerant servers, which range in size from four CPUs to 4,000 CPUs. Last Friday Qantas increased its order by 20 to 85 firm commitments (plus 20 options) without detailing the actual specifications, increasing speculation that it will go for the -10 series aircraft. Boeing

From a passenger point of view the most obvious advancement of the Boeing 787 will be the massive windows. In the Boeing 777, currently the industry's largest, they are 15" (38.1cm) x 10" (25.4cm). The 787 comes in at 18.4" (46.73cm) x 10.7" (27.2cm). These are liquid crystal display liquid crystal display (LCD)

(LCD)-based "auto-dimming" to reduce cabin glare and maintain transparency. The interior cross section at 18 ft 7 in (566 cm) is much the same as the A330/350 and significantly wider than the 767 that it replaces. Advanced new seats, particularly in economy class, are designed for far better comfort, and completely new cabin architecture will be a big improvement. Perhaps the most important innovation is the increase in air pressure, from the common 8,000ft to 6,000ft, said to be not noticeable from that at sea level. Light-emitting diode (LED) cabin lighting will be used instead of fluorescent tubes, allowing the aircraft to be entirely 'bulbless'. Flying in the 787 is likely to be far less tiring and significantly less noisy than in present aircraft. Jul 8, 2007

Boeing

Boeing booked orders for 228 planes in the second quarter, bringing its tally to 544 for the year so far, putting the US planemaker on track to break last year's record. The figure puts Boeing roughly level with rival Airbus, which booked a massive 425 firm orders at the Paris Air Show earlier this month, but hasn't officially updated its order book yet. Boeing took orders for 70 of its carbon-composite 787 Dreamliners in the April to June period, the first of which is set to roll out of the company's Seattle-area plant for the first time on Sunday. Airlines also ordered 22 777s and 136 single-aisle 737s. Jul 6, 2007

Boeing

Boeing's tally of 544 for the year so far puts the company on track to exceed last year's company record of 1,044 net orders. That allowed Boeing to reclaim the title of world's biggest-selling planemaker from Airbus, but the race this year will be tight. Jul 6, 2007

Boeing

Boeing said it delivered 114 commercial planes in the second quarter, making a total of 220 deliveries so far this year. That is an 18 percent increase on the 97 deliveries it made in the same quarter a year ago. At this time last year, Boeing had delivered 195 planes. Boeing is on track to hit its forecast of 440 to 445 plane deliveries this year. Jul 6, 2007

Boeing

A Jefferies & Co. analyst said Boeing's announcement it delivered 114 commercial airplanes in the second quarter makes him more confident the planemaker will meet his full-year earnings estimate, and that the shares could potentially trade above his own price target. Jul 5, 2007

Boeing

Airlines and aircraft lessors never pay the full list price for a plane, with significant discounts for large orders, but the price increase signals Boeing's intent to start negotiations at a slightly higher level. At last week's Paris Air Show, industry analysts said Boeing and rival Airbus were discounting the prices of planes more heavily than usual to secure key orders. A Boeing executive at the show said the company was "happy with where we are at on pricing". Boeing is enjoying strong demand for most of its planes, and is sold out for delivery for the rest of this year and 2008. Customers making orders now would have to wait until 2014 for a 787. Boeing has raised prices on its commercial planes by almost 6 percent on average, as the cost of its raw materials increases. Boeing said the price increase was in line with the general inflation rate for manufactured goods manufactured goods nplmanufacturas fpl; bienes mpl manufacturados

Boeing

Boeing expects to bring its long-awaited 737 replacement to the market by 2015, but is refusing to be pressured into an early launch decision by environmentally conscious airlines or any competitive move by rival Airbus. Alongside advanced airframe materials and systems, engine technology will be key to enabling Boeing to deliver the minimum 15% reduction in direct operating costs operating costs nplgastos mpl operacionales  (DOC) compared with the 737, which Carson says is required to justify launching an all-new aircraft. Launching a replacement for the 737 with technology available now would yield direct operating cost savings of only around 10%. Boeing is unconcerned about the possibility of rival Airbus getting to market first with a replacement for its A320. Jun 26, 2007

Boeing

Airbus's Paris orders avalanche lifted some of the gloom that has surrounded the manufacturer following the A380 delivery delays and runaway success of Boeing's 787, but it failed to completely dispel industry concerns over the underlying health of the manufacturer and its product line. Conspicuous by their absence were major commitments to Airbus's largest in-service offerings, the A340-500 and -600, and new customers for the delayed, ultra-large A380. Jun 26, 2007
