EADS may consider shifting Airbus work to other countries. EADS board members are expected to meet today to discuss problems at Airbus and consider shifting more work to other countries. Also, European and U.S. aviation regulators say the strong wake from the Airbus A380 superjumbo jet will require permanent changes in air traffic control rules. Meanwhile, busy airports will have to juggle A380 landings and take-offs to keep smaller airliners clear of the A380's four engines, which at take-off generate as much thrust as 3,500 cars. Avion Group

Avion Group reported a $69 million net loss for the nine months ended July 31 and warned of a "difficult" fiscal fourth quarter, forcing it to lower its forecast for its fiscal year ending Oct. 31. "The fourth quarter will be difficult because of challenging market conditions in the UK due to terrorist threats, delays and an unusually hot summer," the company said. "Additionally, currency changes will result in $10 million reduction in EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization) A metric used to show a company's profitability, but not its cash flow. EBITDA became popular in the 1980s to show the potential profitability of leveraged buyouts, but has become  than forecasted initially. The results for the fourth quarter and therefore the year in total are projected to fall short of EBITDA forecast of $165 million, as previously stated." Full-year EBITDA is now forecast to increase only slightly from $115 million in 2005 to $120-$125 million in the current year, while group revenue is forecast to increase from $1.4 billion to $2.1 billion. British Airways engine incident creates controversy. An engine manlfunction on a British Airways 747 last year continues to generate controversy over the role of economics versus safety, the Wall Street Journal's Scott McCartney writes. When one of four engines quit working when the London-bound plane took off from Los Angeles, the pilots decided to continue flying, and they traveled more than 5,000 miles before making an emergency landing. Air traffic control tapes reveal more details about the incident, and pilots and regulators continue to debate the decision, McCartney writes. Sep 25, 2006
