That adds up to a worldwide market for jet engines through 2026 potentially valued at $600 billion, the engine-maker said in its long-term forecast released this week. Underpinning the demand will be 6.6% annual growth in Asia/Pacific air traffic over the 20-year period, Rolls said. Growth in Chinese air traffic will be 8% annually, creating a demand for 6,500 jet engines valued at $65 billion in China alone over the next 20 years. Outlook in North America also is strong, with 20,000 engines required to power mainline and regional aircraft through 2026. Jul 19, 2006

Russlan International, Volga-Dnepr Airlines, Antonov Airlines

Russlan International joint venture formed by Stansted-based Volga-Dnepr Airlines and Antonov Airlines is in response to the successful launch in February of the Ruslan Salis (strategic airlift interim solution) project, which essentially commits two An-124 freighters on standby and up to four on call to a specific customer, understood to be NATO NATO: see North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

With these two aircraft committed and other maintenance requirements, the two airlines were anxious to ensure that "the commercial market will not notice the lack of capacity," Dennis Gliznoutsa, Volga-Dnepr UK group commercial director said yesterday. Shannon Engine

Shannon Engine Support ordered 40 CFM56-7B spare engines. Scheduled for delivery between late 2006 and 2010, the order will bring SES's total dash 7B portfolio to more than 80 engines. Snecma

Snecma already participates in two US joint ventures, but this is its first full-service MRO on the continent and is in line with Snecma Services Chairman and CEO Jean-Lin Fournereaux's desire to stake a larger claim in the market for newer-generation CFM engines. In conjunction with the announcement, the new company said it reached agreement in principle with Mexicana on an exclusive 20-year contract covering MRO services for the CFM56-5Bs powering the carrier's A320 fleet. Snecma

Snecma Services Chairman and CEO Jean-Lin Fournereaux said that is only interested in supporting engines in which the parent is involved. This sets it apart from GE and Pratt & Whitney, whose aftermarket units handle both OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  and non-OEM brands. This year, Snecma Services has made its parts repair business into a separate unit, which means it is better able to address internal business as well as that from third parties including rival MRO shops. Earlier this week it signed a three-year support agreement with Czech Airlines covering all LRUs on CSA's CFM56-5Bs. Nouvelair of Tunisia awarded it a time-and-materials contract covering overhauls of 27 CFM56-5A/5Bs. Jul 20, 2006

Snecma, Airbus, Boeing

Snecma is a half-partner with GE in the CFM56 engine family, but Snecma Services and GE Engine Services compete for MRO business with each other and dozens of independent and airline-owned shops. The A320 and 737NG families represent a better opportunity because as Fournereaux said at Farnborough, competition to provide MRO for the CFM56-3 is "horrible," with 40 CFM56 MROs around the world, the majority of them dedicated to the 737 Classic engine. Snecma, AirOne, Airbus

Snecma Services said Italy's Air One awarded it an exclusive long-term contract covering all MRO services, as well as spare engines, for the CFM56-5Bs powering the carrier's recently ordered fleet of 30 A320s. The contract, worth more than $500 million, will cover the engines for a minimum of 16 years, including a minimum of two restoration shop visits per engine. Jul 19, 2006

Snecma, Boeing

Snecma Services took a major step toward boosting its presence in the Americas with an agreement in principle to create a CFM56 maintenance facility in Mexico. The joint venture, Snecma America Engine Services, will be owned 51% by Snecma Services and 49% by Turborreactores SA (ITR) and will be located in Queretaro 220 km. northeast of Mexico City. It is scheduled to start operations in late 2007 and will support CFM56-5 and CFM56-7 engines powering the A320 and 737NG families respectively, as well as providing LRU LRU - Least Recently Used  support and on-wing maintenance. SR Technics' selection as the first MRO organization in Boeing's 787 GoldCare support program reflects the company's aggressive growth in the aftermarket space. "We are on a trail of expansion," Executive VP-Sales & Marketing Declan O'Shea said, citing the recent purchase of SIFCO's Large Aero Engine Turbine Component Business in Ireland for $10 million, which was finalized in May. It also is pursuing an Eastern European narrowbody joint venture MRO and has signed an MOU with Concors to take a majority stake in a Riga-based facility that company is building. O'Shea stressed that although SRT is intent on expanding its global footprint, it is happy to take over the technical management of a fleet without necessarily assuming the touch work. "We don't need to do absolutely everything ourselves," he said, citing as an example its deal with Dragonair covering the airline's A320s and A321s. "That fleet is managed from Zurich," he noted.
