"The delivery of the first Boeing 717 marks a significant day in our company's history," said Joe Leonard For the baseball player, see .

, chairman and chief executive officer of AirTran. "We are proud to be the launch customer for this aircraft and confident passengers will enjoy the innovative features that make travel on the 717 the ultimate flying experience."

The 717-200 was designed specifically for short-haul, high-frequency routes and offers low acquisition, trip and maintenance costs. AirTran's 717 accommodates 117 passengers in a mixed-class arrangement with 12 seats in Business Class and 105 in coach class.

"When most airlines take on a new aircraft, they see significant cost increases, but the 717 will actually reduce our maintenance costs and result in better fuel burn," said Leonard. "The 717s offer increased seats per departure, improved operational reliability and overall flexibility for growth."

This new aircraft was carefully designed with the passenger in mind at each stage of development to create the most comfortable, luxurious and safe airplane for short distance and frequent flights.
