The airline currently operates five daily flights from Reagan National Airport.

AirTran Airways proposes to operate four total roundtrip flights each day between Reagan National and Atlanta Atlanta (ətlăn`tə, ăt–), city (1990 pop. 394,017), state capital and seat of Fulton co., NW Ga., on the Chattahoochee R. and Peachtree Creek, near the Appalachian foothills; inc. 1847.  using 117-seat 717 Stage-3 aircraft, which include a Business Class section and are among the most environmentally sound aircraft flying today.

In the proposal, AirTran Airways requests four slot exemptions to allow the airline to add the additional flights between Reagan National Airport and Atlanta. Pursuant to the Century of Aviation Reauthorization Act (P.L. 108-176), four of the newly available within-perimeter slot exemptions are for air transportation to airports of any size. As a result, for the first time through this process, limited incumbents will be able to obtain four slots to serve "large" hubs. Considering the limited opportunity for the Department of Transportation to promote low fares and competition in a large hub like Atlanta, it is essential that these slots be allocated in a manner that maximizes competitive opportunities.

"By awarding the slots, the Department of Transportation has the opportunity to increase the availability of low fares, enhance service in smaller communities and stimulate travel and tourism to one of the nation's busiest business markets," said Kevin Healy, AirTran Airways' Vice President, Planning and Sales. "Further, with the addition of two daily roundtrip low-fare flights between Atlanta and Washington D.C., AirTran Airways can provide the most convenient arrival and departure times for both business and leisure travelers. Travelers in markets such as Akron-Canton, Myrtle Beach and Wichita will benefit from quicker connections to travel to the nation's capital."

As research continues to indicate American businesses are pursuing low-cost business travel options, the availability of increased flight connections through Atlanta to Reagan National Airport will increase competition and provide benefits for travelers, and AirTran Airways would focus on expanding service options to small hub markets.

The proposed schedule would increase AirTran Airways' roundtrips between Reagan National Airport and Atlanta to five flights daily, with the new flight schedule as follows:
