AirTouch first to launch Motorola's new home location register; Intelligent network component accelerates introduction of new services.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. AND WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- June 27, 1995--AirTouch Communications is the first cellular carrier to deploy Motorola's new stand-alone Home Location Register (HLR), a key intelligent network element for providing customers with leading-edge wireless services and features.

The HLR interfaces with cellular switching equipment as a separate network element and automatically registers customers onto the cellular network. It also maintains an accurate, current profile of the services available to a customer.

Adding the HLR to AirTouch's Atlanta cellular network will enable AirTouch to offer customers access to a broad range of new service features. These may include: call screening, the option to bill calls to calling parties; automatic repeat dialing and shared-number services such as multi-ring and extension phone features. The HLR also provides new anti-fraud features.

The HLR, developed by Motorola Cellular Infrastructure Group (CIG) is a highly reliable, fault-tolerant product. It will support the AirTouch technology strategy by enabling AirTouch to quickly and cost-effectively add new customers to its network.

The HLR was installed in the AirTouch Atlanta network within three days of delivery. This is the first commercial application for the HLR and AirTouch's first service offering on the Signal Control Point (SCP), its advanced Intelligent Network (IN) platform. Ultimately, the SCP will facilitate interconnection with other networks.
