AirTouch and Duracell Provide Emergency Communications Assistance to Hurricane Recovery Effort in Honduras.

United Nations Legal Assessor to Deliver More Than $32,000 in Disaster

Aid to Honduran Capital Tomorrow

In response to the Hurricane Mitch Hurricane Mitch was one of the deadliest and most powerful hurricanes on record in the Atlantic basin, with maximum sustained winds of 180 mph (290 km/h). The storm was the thirteenth tropical storm, ninth hurricane, and third major hurricane of the 1998 Atlantic  disaster, AirTouch Cellular Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  and Duracell Inc. Friday announced they are donating more than $32,000 in telecommunications equipment to the relief effort in Honduras.

Transported as the personal luggage of Eduardo Trochez, legal assessor for the United Nations, the equipment will arrive in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, tomorrow evening.

The wireless phones are equipped with Duracell Ultra Refillable Alkaline Battery Alkaline batteries are a type of power cell dependent upon the reaction between zinc and manganese dioxide (Zn/MnO2).

The phones will be delivered to the Tegucigalpa Chamber of Commerce, and then will be distributed within Honduras to the organizations managing the recovery efforts. CELTEL, the Honduran cellular provider, will provide free airtime to the relief agencies that use the phones and will help them get connected to CELTEL's special emergency service program.

AirTouch coordinated the donation with Duracell and assembled the phones within days of the flooding, but was challenged with finding a way to transport the equipment to Central America Central America, narrow, southernmost region (c.202,200 sq mi/523,698 sq km) of North America, linked to South America at Colombia. It separates the Caribbean from the Pacific. .
