AirTouch Not Required to Pay Additional Fees in Belgium.

Ho, Benny Lau and Lee Lau, ATI chips and boards are widely used by OEMs. ) today announced that, under the terms of its agreement with Belgacom, AirTouch is not required to pay an additional fee for Belgacom Mobile's cellular license.

AirTouch and Belgacom, the Belgian telecommunications company See telecom company. , formed Belgacom Mobile, a mobile communications joint venture, in December 1994. AirTouch owns a 25 percent interest in the venture, which includes Belgacom's analog and digital cellular businesses.

On Sept. 8, the Belgian government awarded the nation's second cellular license to the Mobistar consortium for approximately 9 billion francs (about $295 million). The government has indicated that, like Mobistar, Belgacom Mobile is expected to pay a fee for its cellular license. AirTouch is not required to contribute any additional funding for Belgacom Mobile's license fee.

AirTouch supported the launch of Belgacom's digital cellular network on Jan. 1, 1994. As of June 30, 1995, Belgacom Mobile served 173,000 total subscribers -- 120,000 customers on its digital network and 53,000 on its analog network. The country has 10 million people.
