AirNet and Comsys Provide Industry Leading EDGE Solution; High Speed Data Services Can be Delivered With a Software Upgrade.

Business Editors/Technology Writers

MELBOURNE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 19, 2002

AirNet Communications Corporation (Nasdaq:ANCC ANCC American Nurses Credentialing Center
ANCC Association Nationale des Cardiaques Congénitaux
ANCC Army-Navy Country Club (Arlington, VA)
ANCC Area Nine Cable Council (state mandated government body in UK)
), the technology leader in base station products for wireless communication, and Comsys Communications and Signal Processing See DSP. , a leader in wireless physical layer solutions, today announced that AirNet has entered into a licensing agreement with Comsys to use Comsys' EDGEware(TM) physical layer software solution in the AirNet(R) software defined radio A wireless terminal (phone, PDA, etc.) that is reconfigurable via software. It enables wireless devices to be easily updated to new or later versions of the air interface and allows multiple interfaces to be supported.  (SDR See software defined radio. ). Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

AirNet and Comsys bring the wireless market a better and more cost-effective solution based on EDGE (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution) technology for emerging wireless telecommunications needs. Today, operators rely on EDGE, the de-facto 3G standard and high-speed data strategy for the largest operators in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  and other countries worldwide. These operators have already realized that EDGE provides the most cost effective method for providing broadband data connectivity for their customers. Moreover, because of EDGE's backward compatibility with GSM and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) The first high-speed digital data service provided by cellular carriers that used the GSM technology. GPRS added a packet-switched channel to GSM, which uses dedicated, circuit-switched channels for voice conversations. , service deployment occurs in a shorter period of time, at less cost and with a minimum of infrastructure investment.

"AirNet's broadband SDR base stations coupled with Comsys' EDGEware(TM) software provide compelling evidence of the technology leadership AirNet continues to exhibit in the Wireless Infrastructure market," said Tim Mahar, vice president of worldwide sales and marketing of AirNet. "We continue to serve our customers with a continuing strategy to provide leading edge, cost effective SDR products."

Ronny Gorlicki, Comsys vice president of sales & marketing, said: "Comsys' EDGEware(TM) is a software based physical layer solution that coupled with AirNet's SDR technology provide cellular operators the most cost effective software upgrade path to EDGE. Comsys' EDGEware(TM) technology enables the upgrade to EDGE simply by downloading new software in AirNet's flexible SDR architecture."
