), a Sprint PCS Network Partner, today announced the appointment of James W. Akerhielm to its board of directors. Mr. Akerhielm is the independent director designated by the former iPCS shareholders and approved by AirGate in accordance with the merger agreement between AirGate and iPCS effective November 30, 2001. Mr. Akerhielm has been appointed to a term that expires at the annual meeting of shareholders in 2004. The Company also announced that John R. Dillon, who has been a director of AirGate since 2000, has resigned from the board. With these changes, the AirGate board of directors continues to have eight members.

Mr. Akerhielm brings over 16 years of senior management experience in the telecommunications industry to AirGate. He currently serves as the president and chief executive officer of NewSouth Communications, a regional competitive local exchange carrier in the southeastern United States that operates in 29 markets and generates $150 million in annual revenue. He previously served as president and chief executive officer of a wireless telecommunications company, Triton Cellular Partners, L.P. During his tenure at Triton, he led the acquisition of three contiguous RSA (1) (Rural Service Area) See MSA.
