AirGATE Technologies Validates Closed-Loop Applications.

Research, more companies are employing RFID technology across various industries beyond supply chain management. The study found that while supply chain applications have been the primary haven for RFID adoption, closed-loop RFID applications -- are now finding greater use. "What we're finding as we talk with more end users is that companies are using really unique and innovative applications of this technology," ABI Research Director Liard said. "This survey is a validation that RFID is a theme with a thousand variations and the application opportunities are truly limitless."

Last week, InformationWeek quoted Ronny Haraldsvik, VP of marketing at Alien Technology. Use of RFID tags in the supply chain -- the most famous example being Wal-Mart's mandate to suppliers to tag pallets and cases -- hasn't progressed as fast as the RFID industry had hoped it would, notes Haraldsvik. "We're looking at where the market will be in the next 12 to 18 months, knowing that the mandate market will take a little bit longer than expected," Haraldsvik said. "We've seen a dramatic shift from the mandate market to close-looped systems, where [businesses] in many varieties of industries are adopting RFID on their own terms and not necessarily for the supply chain."

AirGATE has identified the oil and gas industry as one of the largest potential adopters of closed-loop RFID applications. Oil companies are spending money to improve production and efficiencies. Closed loop systems are adopted because they provide justification in terms of costs savings, improved decision-making or other benefits. For example, AirGATE is promoting a system to "tag" drill pipe, an application with great ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system. In the IT world, there are more ways to compute ROI than Carter has liver pills (and for those of you who never heard of that expression, it means a lot). , using its surface acoustic wave A surface acoustic wave (SAW) is an acoustic wave traveling along the surface of a material having some elasticity, with an amplitude that typically decays exponentially with the depth of the substrate.  (SAW) technology, and is negotiating with major oil field suppliers. Because of the harsh environment down-hole, SAW is well-suited to this and other oil industry applications. AirGATE is the exclusive licensee for SAW technology under 16 U.S. and international patents for RFID in the oil industry.

"Early on, we did not see an opportunity to make money in the mandate-driven supply chain and focused our efforts on closed-loop opportunities," stated Michael Sheriff, President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of X-Change. "As has been well documented, most suppliers facing Wal-Mart mandates have been hard pressed to find returns. It's encouraging to see the market support our decision with growing emphasis on closed-loop applications. Increased funding and exclusive intellectual property will let us leverage our closed-loop applications," continued Sheriff.
